Treading Lightly by Joe W. Moore III was written with technical development for advanced timpani playing in mind. It was originally conceived for a student in order to develop true legato strokes, while also exploring the gentle touch that is requires for subtle changes in stroke type.
The piece itself is fast-paced and multi-rhythmic, and it includes extended sounds and techniques such as playing in the center of the timpani in order test the accuracy of the player's technique while also creating an interesting experience for an audience member.
This piece is excellent for just about anyone looking to improve on timpani, and it makes for an excellent college audition piece. It can also fit well as a jury piece or on any percussion recital.
