Ludwig Black Beauty Snare Drums are legendary, having been a fan favorite for what seems like forever. Making a seamless shell from a single sheet of beaded brass and giving it a black nickel finish is difficult, and they produce very limited numbers each year.
This drum is constructed from the same brass as the regular black beauty, but the texture is hammered, providing a different spread of overtones and a more stand-out, custom-built design. Tube lugs have a classic look, and the lack of gaskets on the lugs debatably allows the shell to resonate slightly more freely.
Brass produces a loud metallic attack, but it's far warmer and rounder than steel and more active than aluminum. The 6.5" depth of this model is extremely popular, giving you a wide usable tuning range.
