Cold Light by Benjamin Finley features a marimba soloist backed up by a percussion quartet in a clean, straight-forward piece that drives towards an energetic - but never frantic - conclusion that should please everybody involved.
The solo marimba part flows easily in permutations across the keyboard, and is very reminiscent of something Emmanuel Sejourne might have written, with octaves highlighting a melody that rides overtop of underlying grooves. The ensemble helps move the groove along, complete with a drum set player.
This percussion chamber piece would fit nicely into a college recital or a percussion ensemble concert, with a go-getter in the soloist spot.
