Guac is Extra by John Herndon is an excellent way to introduce young or inexperienced percussionists to the world of Latin percussion without them needing to learn often-complicated hand drum technique. Despite being a Latin-style ensemble, all the parts are played entirely with sticks.
Although it is not an immensely challenging piece, there is a lot of important percussion language packed into it, including ride cymbal patterns and clave grooves that are paramount in Latin music. This makes it an excellent option pedagogically.
