Just a Matter of Time by Jamieson Carr is a timpani solo that somehow manages to be very challenging for the performer as well as interesting and listenable for the audience! It's written in three main sections - a moto perpetuo beginning, a nebulous middle, and a groovy end.
This piece tests all sorts of timpin' skills, from quick drum-to-drum movements to lots and lots of pedal changes. A great sense of musicality is needed as well, as there is quite a bit of dynamic and phrase-related nuance.
It is recommended to play this solo with five drums, but it can be done with four.
