David Reeves's snare drum solo War Drum Peace Drum features a mysteriously dark audio accompaniment that sets a very unique mood on the stage. Written for the annual Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Snare Drum Competition, this piece fits in the 'weird but cool' category quite nicely.
The challenge in the playing lies in lining up with the track while maintaining the control necessary to blend at all times. Nearly devoid of rudiments, the notes themselves require knowledge of some advanced rhythms, and plenty of fast single-stroke chops.
This solo is moody and shadowy, making it a great choice for a recital that needs a little something different.
