Brian Slawson's Animal Cracker Rag is a fun and light-hearted xylophone solo geared towards the beginning mallet player with a sense of humor. With musical nods to Dmitry Kabalevsky and Aram Khachaturian, Animal Cracker Rag recalls the early days of ragtime in an entertaining and sometimes humorous way.
While some of the faster runs may present a challenge for younger players, this piece is geared towards beginner percussionists, and as such, would fit right in at a middle school solo and ensemble contest or as a feature at a band concert. Animal Cracker Rag also includes an optional piano accompaniment that was written with the beginner percussionist seeking piano experience in mind.
